Krav Maga Self-defence – Women-Only Workshop

December 12, 2015 - 12:00–15:00. Course for beginners, no experience needed.

This workshop is for all independent women, age 16 and above, who don’t want to rely on a knight in shining armour to happen by if they end up in a bad situation. You already have the ability to take care of yourself; we will build on your instinctive reactions and natural movements to make them more effective and more powerful.

Krav maga is a reality-based self-defence system. It is used all over the world by civilians, armed forces, and law enforcement, and is widely recognized as the most effective self-defence system in the world today. It is much simpler and faster to learn than traditional martial arts, because it works with your instinctive reactions. Krav maga techniques are based on gross motor skills, which means that they are much more likely to actually work in a highly stressed situation than fancy moves that look good on the telly but are too complex to pull off if you are fighting for your life.

This course is for women only, and we will focus on attacks and problems that women are more likely to encounter. But Krav maga is made to work for everyone, regardless of age, gender, and physical fitness. You don’t have to be very flexible or particularly strong. Krav maga is designed to work in real life, in all sorts of conditions, against larger opponents, and from positions of disadvantage. There are no rules: it is a self-defence system, so dirty tricks are not only allowed but encouraged. Techniques in the system are made to stop an attacker as quickly and effectively as possible, so that you can stay safe.

In this course we will cover:

  • Simple and powerful strikes.
  • Working with your strengths and weaknesses.
  • Defences against some common attacks, including attempts to choke, hair grabs, and attacks where the defender is on the ground.
  • Awareness: identifying potentially dangerous situations and avoid or stop them as early as possible. Things to look out for.
  • Common reactions to stress.
  • Mindset: practicing confidence and determination.

Even though self-defence is a serious topic, we focus on having fun and creating a friendly and open atmosphere in all our courses and classes. It makes it easier to learn new skills, and it’s simply more enjoyable!

After this course you will know more about what you can do if you are threatened or attacked. You will have some simple and effective tools that could help you if you need to defend yourself, and you will know defences against some common types of attacks.

This is an introductory workshop that will give you some basic tools for your “self-defence” tool-box. If you want to learn more after the workshop, there will be more advanced workshops, building on this one, coming up in 2016.

The workshop is on Saturday 12 December from 12:00 to 15:00 at the North Merchiston Club.

Price for the workshop is £25, or £15 for students.

We also run mixed classes (women and men) 2 nights a week. These classes focus on improving and expanding your self-defence skills, and each class is a full-body workout so you are likely to find your fitness improving noticeably as well.
